Pro Tips
Five habits that make an answer faster, cleaner and easier to follow.
- Ask before you solveClarify scope, geography, time frame and units.“Global or India? Per day or per year? Volume or value?”
- Anchor on benchmarksStart from numbers you know cold: population, households, GDP.India ≈ 140 Cr people ≈ 30 Cr households.
- Borrow by analogyScale a comparable market or city by population and income.“If Mumbai has X, Pune at a third the size has ~X/3.”
- Round aggressivelyPick numbers that divide cleanly and keep the maths out loud.Use 100 M, not 103 M; 4 per household, not 4.4.
- Think in layersPrimary drivers first, then secondary adjustments, then a sanity test.Population → seasonality → “is 1 B cars in one city plausible?”
Thinking in layers, drawn out
Build every estimate in three passes. The first pass gets you within range; the second makes it realistic; the third catches mistakes before the interviewer does.
Round like this
| Exact | Say | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| 1.44 billion people | 140 Cr | Divides cleanly by 4 and 7. |
| 4.4 people per household | 4 (urban) / 5 (rural) | Turns population into households in one step. |
| 365 days | ~360 | Divides cleanly by 12 and 30. |
| 103 M users | 100 M | Percentages become mental maths. |
Say the rounding out loud (“call it 140 crore for easy maths”) so the interviewer knows it’s deliberate.
